Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, affecting as many as 1 woman in 10 in the U.S. Breast cancer screening leads consistently to a reduction in breast cancer deaths. All women should be educated on breast self-examination techniques, which should be performed on a monthly basis at the same time every month. Breast examination by a physician should also be done yearly after the age of 40. Furthermore, for women 40-74, screening mammography is recommended every 1-2 years. For women less than 40, and those older than 74, the benefit of screening is not as obvious, and should be discussed with your doctor. Consultation with a doctor is mandatory for all women, regardless of age, if significant family risk factors for breast cancer exist.
