Understanding Your Bill

Why So Many Bills?

Hospital services are provided by a number of different departments and physicians. The hospital will send you a separate bill for the use of the facility (i.e. drugs, tests, nursing time etc.). This bill is typically the largest bill you will receive and can be as high as 4-5 times what the ER doctor will bill you.

In addition to the ED MD, you may have received services from a radiologist (the one who interpreted your X-Ray), a pathologist (the one who oversees the laboratory), a consulting specialist, or other health care provider. Each provider will bill separately for their service.

Your bill is not only a reflection of the time spent on your illness, but reflects the complexity of your treatment and the time spent with its diagnosis.

If you have medical insurance be sure that EMA has that information. If it was provided at the time of service then we have it.

EMA will bill your insurance carrier if you signed a document called "assignment of benefits". Most likely you did. A sample of the form can be viewed by clicking on this link.

EMA will first attempt to collect from your health insurance carrier. You will receive a copy of the bill.

You can identify our bill by the information indicated directly on it. You will find the name of your treating MD and the location of services clearly indicated.

Exam and diagnostic codes are included for insurance and other agency information and allow for standardized billing.

EMA fees are within the approved range and acceptable standards for Emergency Services in this area. They are regulated and monitored.

Our billing statements may have a message box that contains specific information for your attention.

If during your emergency you came to the hospital without proper ID or insurance information it is imperative that you forward the correct information to Greg Temm at the address below.
